Individuals Coming Off Weight-Loss Injections Put On Weight Four Times Faster Compared to Those on Conventional Diets
A recent study reveals that individuals who come off popular GLP-1 drugs like Wegovy and Mounjaro can put back on lost weight far faster than those who halt traditional diet and exercise regimens.
Findings released in a leading medical journal demonstrates that while overweight people frequently drop a large proportion of their total mass while undergoing treatment, the mass is regained at an estimated rate of 0.8 kg per month after stopping.
"Individuals purchasing these treatments must be informed of the danger of quick rebound weight gain when the therapy ends," warns researcher Dr. Susan Jebb.
This pace of regain implies a return to starting weight within about 18 months.
Weighing Treatments
The research, which reviewed 37 of studies involving over 9,000 of patients, compared the effects of GLP-1 agonists with conventional dieting.
The team note that individuals who lose weight through diet and exercise generally experience a less rapid creep back—perhaps 100 grams monthly—post-intervention.
The Reason for the Rapid Regain
Nutrition scientists propose the mechanism of the drugs accounts for the accelerated rebound.
The injections mimic a natural hormone called glucagon-like peptide-1, which moderates hunger.
"Sustained high doses of GLP-1 levels several times higher than normal could lead to the system to generate a reduced amount of its endogenous hormone, and could reduce responsiveness to its actions," noted Dr. Adam Collins, a dietetics expert.
"Stopping of this GLP-1 'fix' results in hunger is uncontrolled, making overeating much more probable."
A Lifelong Condition?
Medical guidelines advise the injections for individuals with obesity-related medical conditions, alongside prescribed lifestyle changes.
A number of clinicians argue that, given the significant potential of weight regain, the therapy should be considered life-long.
This view is supported by drug manufacturers, who note that the results "emphasize the persistent nature of excess weight," akin to managing conditions like high blood pressure.
Patient Testimonies
People who have come off the medication explain a powerful return of hunger.
"It was like a trigger flipping and you become ravenous," said a patient.
The struggle is exacerbated if patients have not adopted sustainable lifestyle or habit changes during therapy.
Growing Interest
Survey data suggest that millions of people in the UK have tried these injections in the last 12 months, with demand being substantial.
- Use is higher among females than males.
- The middle-aged demographic shows the greatest usage rates.
- A large proportion obtain the drugs through private healthcare rather than public health services.
Ultimately, experts emphasize that while the jabs are potent agents for shedding pounds, they are not a standalone solution and maintained weight loss likely depends on ongoing behavioural management.
